Forging Viking Tongs
This video shows the process of forging pre-medieval tongs. This style of tongs runs from the iron age to the medieval period and as such is suitable for Viking, Roman, Anglo-Saxon setups.
If you would like to forge your own tongs to this spec, please consider purchasing my step-by-step drawings, featuring measurements in both metric and Imperial : rowan-taylor-glamorous.sellfy.store/p/viking-tongs-step-by-step-drawings-with-measurements/

Forging a Roman Iron Fibula
Просмотров 14 тыс.Год назад
In this video, I forge a reproduction Roman Iron Fibula. This is based on several finds and is one of the smallest intricate objects I have forged. If you are interested in creating your own, you can follow the video or I have created step-by-step drawings for you to follow which you can purchase here: rowan-taylor-glamorous.sellfy.store/p/forging-a-roman-iron-fibula-rowan-taylor/
Recreating the iron stand from Sutton Hoo. Part 2: The bull head capital.
Просмотров 11 тыс.6 лет назад
In this video, the second in the Iron Stand series, I reproduce the topmost element - a radiused cross surmounted by four bull heads.
Reproducing the Iron Stand from Sutton Hoo. Part 1: The shaft.
Просмотров 7 тыс.6 лет назад
In this episode, I commence the reproduction of the Iron Stand from Sutton Hoo. Here, I create the shaft for the stand, which tapers from 20 X 16 down to 10mm square at the top - the longest continuous taper I have ever forged. I then create two twists on the top section and forge-weld a pair of scrolls above the base.
reproducing the Sutton Hoo Axehammer. Part 4: Completion.
Просмотров 8 тыс.6 лет назад
In this video, I complete the Sutton Hoo axehammer reproduction. I forge and shape a suspension ring and hot-rasp the bevels before heat treating the axehead.
Forging the Sutton Hoo axehammer. Part 3: Profiling, assembly and new ring.
Просмотров 10 тыс.6 лет назад
In this video, the third in the Sutton Hoo Axehammer series, I profile and complete the forgework on the head of the axehammer and fit it to the iron handle. I also replace the swivel-ring from episode one with a better and more accurate example.
Forging the Sutton Hoo Axehammer. Part 2: The head.
Просмотров 9 тыс.6 лет назад
In this video, the second episode in the axehammer series, I create the hammeraxe head from wrought iron, with a forge-welded hammer face and steel bit as well as a punched and drifted eye.
Forging the Sutton-Hoo axe-hammer. Part I, the iron handle.
Просмотров 13 тыс.6 лет назад
In this video, brought forwards by a couple of weeks due to the loss of my bayonet footage, I begin the process of reproducing the Sutton Hoo axehammer. The axe hammer was excavated from the ship burial at Sutton Hoo, the same grave as the cooking chain was found in. What was the purpose of the axe? it is a matter of debate and theories range from it being a weapon to a caulking iron. My person...
Casting experiment #1
Просмотров 6 тыс.6 лет назад
Due to equipment problems, I've not been able to continue the Bayonet series over the past couple of weekends so in the meantime here is a video on learning how to cast metals. The next bayonet video will be out this coming Saturday and normal service should be restored after that! As I am a conservation blacksmith, I occasionally have to work on cast iron. My ultimate goal is to be able to cas...
Forging a Brown Bess Bayonet. Part 3: Preparing the socket and scarfing the blade.
Просмотров 7 тыс.7 лет назад
In this video, I refine some wrought iron in order to create a finer material to create the socket. I also prepare the blade for welding.
Forging a 1st model Brown-Bess Bayonet. Part 2: forging the blade.
Просмотров 8 тыс.7 лет назад
In this video, the second episode in the Forging a Brown Bess bayonet series, I forge the blade. The blade is forged from a 100 year old bar of homogeneous carbon steel of unknown chemistry but high carbon content. The blade is forged deliberately thick in order that it be ground to its final proportions. In this video you will see forging to a trangular section, forging large square tapers, do...
Forging a Brown Bess Bayonet: Part 1: Tooling-up.
Просмотров 11 тыс.7 лет назад
In this video, the first of a new series, I begin setting up for the production of a first model Brown Bess Bayonet. To do this, I create a double-fullering tool and a mandrel in order to weld-up the fixing socket. This particular type of Bayonet would have seen action during the revolutionary war and to a lesser extent the war of 1812. Enjoy these videos? Want to help? You can donate money on ...
Forging a mini turning hammer for Pete Smith
Просмотров 9 тыс.7 лет назад
In this video, I forge a miniature hammer for a former tutor, Pete Smith. Pete is an amazing chap whose nickname is "the wizard" and for very good reason. Pete, alongside Chris, Adrian and Dave, is one of the people without whom I would not be where I am today. Have a look at his website: www.wherethelightgetsin.co.uk I apologise for the delay with the next series, I have had some techical diff...

Just to reiterate what so many are saying, I’ve been watching your videos for years, so glad you’re back. One of my blacksmithing teachers in Sveg, Sweden, described you as the master of welding. Your work is endlessly inspiring, you’re one of the best Rowan!

Thanks for sharing Rowan. They look like quite a heavy set of tongs? I've always been intrigued by the design as they don't look like they'd grip particularly well. Though using them in pairs makes far more sense. I look forward to the next video. All the best Andy
